    Default Spreading scent questions

I got some scent to mess with my dog(boxer). I know 0 about anything hunting related. Is there an ideal way to disperse the scent? Spray bottle or drops in clumps? Any particular time of day or weather? How much do I drop? Any other tips or anything else I should know? Thanks for any advice.

What exactly are you trying to accomplish, "mess with my dog" is rather vague?

Knowing exactly what you want to do should help answer your questions.

I just want to see if she will detect the scent, look for an animal, try to cover the scent or anything really. It's just an experiment.

Don't put it on your shoes because she will probably pee on them.

Is this for hunting or are you trying to do detection type work like we do for substances (non animal)

I wouldn't do it in the house, she might piss on it depending on what scent you are using.

If you want to teach your dog to "find it" or "seek" start with food. I used cheese and milk bones with my doberman. I would hide them and have the dog sit with my wife or vice versa. Then I'd let him smell my hand and tell him find the xxx. Once he found it he had to sit or lay down before he could have it.

Once he knew what the treats where, I stopped letting him sniff my hand and would just tell him find the xxx. Its damn impressive to hear him sniffing around the house finding it.

I can have him find anything at the moment, matchsticks, keys, wallet, glasses, etc. I haven't done it enough to just tell him go find my keys without letting him sniff my hand first.

    Detection type work.

That's a good idea wrangler. My dog already finds cheese. It's in the bottom drawer of our fridge.

When I start a dog out on a scent I will use these little scent balls found at elitek9. You can make them with a small wiffleball and some paracord. The idea is to put some of the odor inside the ball, tease up the dog while u hold him back and then throw the ball upwind into heavy grass. Let the boy go and let his hunt drive do the rest....when he finds it, make a BIG deal and play, play, play with the odor source.

This is how I do my most basic imprinting. If the odor yo want him to find is dangerous or is impractical to put in the ball, put some substance in a sealed container with a bag of cotton balls for a few days and then load the cotton balls into the wiffleball. Remember, you are not teaching the dog to find the target but the target odor.

The scent I have is pheasant. Depending on how she reacts to it I might look for others. Thanks.
