Only problem is a Marlin 60 is a semi, not legal for hunting.
That said have a real old one, pre-68 no serial number, marked for Western Auto as a Revelation model 120. Got it for $25 and all it needed was a good cleaning.
While some changes have been made to upgrade the current feed system, the parts still interchange with Marlin 60's.

I have a ruger American rimfire that I purchased a couple of weeks ago. As someone else mentioned it has a great trigger and is very accurate. It is a little higher than your budget at about $250 to $275 out the door depending on dealer. I bought the rifle specifically for hunting as well and so far I am extremely happy with it so far.

I picked up my Marlin 25 used for $150 at a LGS known for high prices.

Solid gun, perfect deep bluing and shoots straight. Only complaint is that you have to be careful that the mag really clicks in there. Not a big deal to me as I don't plan on doing any tactical reloads while squirrel hunting.

Savage make many models of bolt 22's. Mine is very accurate. Or go the used route and pick something up cheap out of a shop or at a show.

I'm going to keep my eye on this thread I'm also in the market for a .22 bolt. I'm leaning towards the savage mk2 fv models.
