Re: Start reloading?
Milsurp stuff is harder to beat, but it can still be done. ...it will just take longer to recoup the costs of the equipment. With ammo prices still affected by the gun law scares, you can recoup faster versus these present prices. But should prices return to pre-scare levels, it will take longer.
If you shoot any specialized ammo, or hunting grade stuff - reloading will save you $ real fast. But still, you have to recoup your equipment investment before actual savings happens. The more expensive gear you get, the longer it will take.RIP: SFN, 1861, twoeggsup, Lambo, jamesjo, JayBell, 32 Magnum, Pro2A, mrwildroot, dregan, Frenchy, Fragger, ungawa, Mtn Jack, Grapeshot, R.W.J., PennsyPlinker, Statkowski, Deanimator, roland, aubie515

Re: Start reloading?
Forgot to mention...my son has a .444 Marlin and asked me to keep an eye out for ammo.
I found two boxes yesterday at Dunkleburgers.
240 grain, 20 in a box of course, FORTY SEVEN DOLLARS
Called son and he said
Now, THERE is a reason to reload.

Re: Start reloading?
.30-06 and 8mm can be over $2 a round also in retail.
I got into reloading in the early 90's when the government was dumping all excess .30-06 and you could get IMR4895 in 8lb jugs for about $50, bullets where sold in min 1000qty lots and milsurp brass, too.
So back then there was a HUGE advantage to reloading.
Now a days you will still save, but not like back then. Plus with the last lead smelter being shut down God only knows what the price of lead will be.

Re: Start reloading?
If history should teach us anything, it should show that the common thread running through all regulating is the propensity to "improve" it or apply the "more is better" rule.
From that, a logical progression can be extrapolated. Lead stopped in the supply side. Forced EPA-supervised removal of lead (such as the berms on a shooting range).
For now, some pretty decent plated pistol bullets from South Africa are available for non-competitive target shooting. I expect that to stop, to prevent them from being driven into berms and improve the health threat of indoor ranges.
Like the incandescent light bulb....better stock up.

Re: Start reloading?
Here's a great calculator to show you how much reloading saves:
http://www.handloads.com/calc/loadingCosts.asp
For .45 ACP I can make a box of 50 for about $9.50 a box for 230 gr FMJ and 9mm 115 gr FMJ for under $7.50 a box. This is with range brass I picked up and Precision Delta FMJ bullets.Any vote for a third party is a vote for a Democrat. You are the enemy.

Re: Start reloading?
LOL!!!! ^^^
Jeff Quinn said it well, "you may not save money reloading, but you will get to shoot more." and I find that true. I could not afford to shoot big bore calibers at current prices.
The worst part about reloading for me is that I have begun to enjoy reloading MORE than shooting... DANG that "Johnny Reb" who gave me his .38 dies & gear! He was right after all. God Bless him.Last edited by dp2002; December 31st, 2013 at 12:10 AM.

Re: Start reloading?
the old is it cheaper to reload then to just buy ammo. the most expensive part of a round is the brass. so it stands if you don't have to pay for that one component. you will save.
now if you cast your own bullets the savings will be more. but the expense of getting started will be greater also. but you will hit the pay back point quicker. plus you will be shooting more.
now no one has come out and said it. but it is the independence of not having to worry if there is going to be ammo on the shelf when you want it or need it.
