Achieving muzzle flash with AR
This is kind of an ironic question because most of us want to reduce muzzle flash, but since I'm into photography and I plan on purchasing a much faster lens so I can take nice crisp clear photo's at high speed, having a nice bright muzzle flash will make for much better photo's.
Obviously, having a flash suppressor installed is going to greatly reduce the amount of muzzle flash achieved, so here is where I need advice from other shooters on what to do.
If I were to remove the flash suppressor, what would be a suitable alternative to replace it with to achieve the desired results?

Replace it with nothing. Short barrels with a regular crown and hot ammo (5.56) make tasty fireballs. Even a good brake will vent flames from the ports, but generally isn't as large as nothing at all.

Re: Achieving muzzle flash with AR
for best results on getting a huge flash:
1. short barrel with no brake or flashhider
2. USE COMMERCIAL 5.56 or .223 ammunition!!
military ammo, even wolf, contains a flash reducer, like calcium carbonate.
sometimes this is so effective I've gotten NO fireball even off a 6.5" barrel on my M16.
to get consistent HUGE fireballs, use commercial loadings with a standard crowned muzzle.
further, if just taking the FH off a regular AR barrel, make sure you replace the FH with at least a muzzle nut.
5.56 barrels at the 1/2" FH thread size can spread under fire if the FH is not replaced with something to keep the muzzle constricted.
good luck, and post the pics."Oderint Dum Metuant" - BMFH

Re: Achieving muzzle flash with AR
I get some mad flamez with my Kel-Tec PLR with the muzzle brake installed. Without it, it just throws it straight out there. Fun but not as exciting as getting your eyebrows synged. Course, thats probably a personal pref.
