    Default Galitzen Forest

I drove through Galitzen State Forest today while on a business trip.
Spotted several hunters along Route 56.
    How is it for hunting?

I was just driving through and found it to be a cool looking place.
That hairpin turn by the Hickory Rocking Chair place on Rt 56 was exciting with an 18-wheeler on my ass.

That was the infamous Peggy Westover curve , many a fatality on that one . Years ago that area was a hot spot for deer .

Oh wow, that's still there? Haven't been down that mountain in years.

If you go near the Prince Gallitzen State park campground I hear you can hunt deer with a loaf of bread and a hammer.

Because they are used to being hand-fed by the campers

    Go where there Mr MagofEmpty?

As far as deer/bear report, it wasn't as good this year as it was the past year. Overall still a couple nice bucks I know came out of there but the guys had to work for them.

I dunno. I never hunted up there, but I've camped there since the time I was in diapers.

if you were on 56 and passing thru the gallitzin you went thru ogletown and windber. i grew up in ogletown, and got lost in the gallitzin as a kid a time or two. lots of deer there, and quite a few bear. the Babcock reserve may still have an albino herd in captivity at the head of clear shade creek. naglicks bar may still be open. the blue moon went under in the 80's. it was my grandmother's place, and we used to throw apples from the orchard behind it with ash sticks at the deer across the road behind howard grant's place.

I am in the woods almost every day during the fall in this area. Mostly in the Clear shade part of the forest.

This year was not the best for deer sightings, seems every deer track I saw had 2-3 yote tracks right beside it. So yes there are lots of coyotes in the area.

As for Prince Gallitzin state park, that is 40 miles from ogletown and route
    56's hair pin turn.
