The # 23 is the last two digits of the serial #. If all of the parts are so marked it is what is considered 'All Matching',meaning all of the parts are as installed when it was made and there are no replacement parts installed. This increases the value and interest to collectors. IMHO hang on to this one. I'm no Colt expert;but they do retain value very well, shoot well and you may have a good collectors piece in your hands. Contact Colt and for a fee they will authenticate the history for you. Good luck.

Use it for a shooter--the S&W rear was quite a common modification at one time. The serial number shows that it started life as a M1911 and was refurbished some time prior to WWII to bring it up to M1911A1 Specs which was also common.
    Finish is not standard.

    Enjoy your 1911.

It's a bit of a haul, but Tom's Sport Shop in Charleroi, PA is pretty good. Tom used to build a lot of 1911's and he's the only gunsmith I take my stuff to.
