    Default loading .45 contradictory data

I'm loading 230 grain JHP using Bullseye powder.

According to the Lee manual, 5.0 grains is the ONLY quantity recommended
for a 230 grain metal jacket bullet and Bullseye powder
5 grains is the starting load, and its also the "Do not exceed" load.
According to the guide it should get that puppy moving about 905 FPS

That sounds pretty good to me for a 230 grain .45.

So I made up about 50 rounds.

Later on, I find a reloading guide on Alliant's website and THEY say that for a 230 grain JHP I should use 5.4 grains and it'll get the bullet moving at
    865 FPS.

Well, if 5.4 will get me 865 feet per sec and I have only 5.0, will this be a badly underpowered load?

Logic tells me that Alliant should know their powder better than Lee, but Lee is pretty reputable. Why such a variance in data?

Lee says NEVER exceed 5.0 grains for this bullet. Alliant says use 5.4

I am confused by the conflicting info. Is it safe to use the rounds I loaded
if they are way under-powered, or is that adequate either way.

Check another manual. Bear in mind that some manual publishers use 18" pressure barrels for testing loads and some use an exemplar firearm. The manual should state which is used.

BTW: Speer #13 shows Bullseye 5.2 gr. (779 fps) and maximum 5.7 gr. (840 fps) The test firearm was a Sig P220 with 4.4" barrel.

5.0 grains would not be a serious underload, just a mild target load.

The basic load of the ages is a 230 grain slug @ 750 FPS. Your load is fine. There is no need to hot rod the velocity. Check the crimp that you set, ensure accuracy and function.

Went back and check my data I kept when I reloaded 45 ACP.
Bulleye 5.4gr powder for 185gr JHP - loaded 2,300 rounds no problems.
Bulleye 5.1 gr powder for 230gr FMJ - loaded 1700 rounds no problems.
Hope this helps, Don't need really hot loads.

Given that this thread is 4 years old, the OP has probably:

    found the data

    given up

    blown his gun up

    hopefully the first one happened.

Really - the powder manufacturer has 5.3 as a max load: 230g FMJ w/ W231
