    Any hunter worth his salt would know that if the critter's eyes are closed that more than likely it is still alive.

    Of all the deer I've killed not one dead one had closed eyes.

    Ive heard about this before. typically happens from small caliber high velocity rifles. Its also what caused the bang-flop. you shoot a deer and the bullet creates a large temporary wound cavity that it shocks the deer and they get knocked out so to speak. but if you miss the vitals the deer doesn't have time to bleed out and die, so it wakes up and takes off.
