Buying a handgun as a gift?
Boyfriends gun, ammo, magazines, and range bag were stolen. Christmas is around the corner and I'd like to buy everything that was taken.
I've tried reading up on gifting guns, and how you'd have to go to an ffl dealer and deal with paperwork, all that jazz.
Is there any way I could pay for the gun, and leave it at the dealer for my boyfriend to fill out the info so that there is no transfers involved?
Or if there was a way I could get his carry permit, ssi, and license info and write it down but then have him come pick it up afterwords?
I am over 21, but Id rather buy the gun for him and have it all ready instead of just throwing him the exact amount of money for the gun, or buying it in my name and switching it all over to him.
Any insight would be helpful and appreciated. Thanks!Last edited by Judas_Priestess; November 17th, 2013 at 12:43 AM.

Haha, he will be lucky if I can find a way to surprise him (legally of course).

Take him to the gun store and tell him you are buying the gun for him as a present. Have him fill out all the paperwork and you pay.
He might return the favor by taking you to the jewelry store to pick out a ring.

Re: Buying a handgun as a gift?
When my girlfriend bought me a 91/30, we went to the lgs together, I picked out what I wanted, and when it came time to check out, I filled out the paperwork and she paid for it. The owner of the shop didn't say anything about it.

Re: Buying a handgun as a gift?
Well, I already know which one(s) he likes/wants, so that won't be hard. I make sure to listen to every detail he ever tells me about what handguns and accessories he wants, but that would take away all of the surprise.
Maybe I could make it work though, just take him to the gun store to "look around for prices" and BAM "SURPRISE I'M BUYING YOU A GUN."

Some shops offer gift cards. That's an option. Or just print out a picture of a gun and put it in a box with the money.
I'm sure he will be too happy to worry about the presentation. He's a lucky man.

Re: Buying a handgun as a gift?
i don't know really anything about dealers or anything but I am betting that if you just talk to the owner or the gun store and explained the situation they would probably let you pay and then wait to transfer the gun once christmas hits. Like I said I am just guessing here i don't really know a whole lot. But the one gun store here even does layaway for 30 days.
