Re: WTS: Colt 1911
ok. now i'm researching this gun, and my above post is a little misinformed.
first off, here are two images, the right side of the gun with the rear sight removed, and the left side with the rear sight just resting on it.
ok. now ive done a little more investigating and i can more accurately describe the gun
i said in my first post that the gun was accurized, and i believed it to be more of a recent thing, but it seems as this may have been done when this was still in service, the serial is 13xx23, and every single part of the gun is marked with a 23 i mean every part, down to the barrel, barrel bushing, slide, firing pin assy, slide stop, original magazine, (you get the point), etc.....
now i dont know if this is true or not, but my dad was teling me that he read that a service gun that has been accurized will be marked in this manner, because it is assembled and disassembled so often.
can anyone tell me anything else about the gun, or point me in the right direction?
oh and if anyone wants to see more scans, or pictures of particular parts etc, let me knowLast edited by Justin; January 14th, 2007 at 06:48 PM. Reason: removed part of the serial

Re: WTS: Colt 1911

http://www.coolgunsite.com/pistols/1...ge%20M1911.htm
it has the A A stamp for augustus armory, and the Gilbert H Stewart stamp
it is not a savage slide as is shown on that page.

Re: WTS: Colt 1911
I'm confused by this piece of information. If you look at the back of the grip, underneath the grip safety, this weapon has a curved mainspring housing. However, curved mainspring housings were a feature of the 1911A1, which wasn't produced by Colt until 1924:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M1911
The original model 1911 pistols, made prior to 1924, had a straight mainspring housing.
Either:
- You have something really special (like a prototype)
- The mainspring housing was somehow replaced by a newer one
- Your research on the serial number is incorrect
- The serial number you have somehow isn't the actual serial for the gun
- My information is incorrect

There is actually a database and you can look your gun up at http://armscollectors.com/srs/lookup_auto.php for a fee, they also send you a history of your gun... Have fun!
Other guns can be searched at http://www.armscollectors.com/srs.htmLast edited by Frenchy; January 15th, 2007 at 01:38 AM.

Re: WTS: Colt 1911
ok, regarding that site that Frenchy posted, it doesnt have my exact serial but one that is 12 away from mine was first recorded in 1917.
As for what Chamberedround said, i just double checked the serial on a few sites including the one that frenchy posted and the date seems to be right....from what ive been reading i believe it could be some type of prototype or customized gun, i am still trying to figure out why exactly every single part is marked with a 23.
thatnks for the input guys, keep it coming

Re: WTS: Colt 1911
You M1911 has M1911-A1 parts because it was re-built for WW2. Augusta Arsenal were a repair and rebuild facility for M1911s. That is why it is AA marked. The GHS stamp is the world war one ear inspector stamp of Gilbert H Stewart. All 1911s that remained in inventory after WW1 got overhauled and brought up to M1911-A1 specs. Hammer, Alide stop, safety, Arch Mainspring housing, ect. were all changed. Arsenals like AA or Raritan(RA) or Springfield (SA) or Rock Island (RIA) were major repair and refurb facilities.
Your pistol was a typical rebuild at AA. The finish is non factory and certainly non issue. The sights are after market too. The value of your pistol is in its shooting value as the collector value is gone.
Many thousands of those war time up grade 1911s were surplus in the 1960s and sold thru the DCM.

Re: WTS: Colt 1911
ok i just found out that the sight is a standard s&w K frame sight, and that it was a common mod for 1911's by the USMC MTU in the late 60s

Re: WTS: Colt 1911
S&W sight conversions were very popular with custom builder in that era as well.
