Do you get paperwork when you transfer a gun?
Hey all - "newish" poster here -
I have a question regarding - transfers of handguns -
I had a handgun transferred to me , years ago, and it recently occurred to me, that I have no paperwork regarding that transfer at all.
My mother in law transferred the gun (my deceased father-in-law's), and I was there, at a local gun shop, with her when the transfer was made -
That gun shop owner retired, and is long gone - I have no paperwork or "proof?" I "own" this gun - do I need it?
How do I get any paperwork - or even make sure there is any?
thanks guys -

Re: Do you get paperwork when you transfer a gun?
PA has no "official" gun registry. That said they do now keep a database on handguns that have been sold or transferred through a gun dealer or sheriffs dept. It is called a "Record of Sale" and is still being hotly debated whether it is legal or not.
That said, there is no need for you to have any paperwork on the gun your MIL gave you. Just like there is no paperwork needed if you have lived in multiple states during your life and bought handguns legally in those states and brought them with you when you moved back to PA (think of a military person living in different states and retiring to PA). If you bought them legally they do not have to be "registered" when you move into the state.
Bottom line, you don't have to prove they belong to you, the authorities have to prove that they don't belong to you.Ron USAF Ret E-8 FFL01/SOT3 NRA Benefactor Member

" Badges, we don't need no stinking badges". Works here to. You don't need to prove anything. The LEO's need to prove you DON'T own it, and since there is no registry (leagal reg) that is. You should be fine as long as you stay away from Dickson City.

FYI - the gun is a Ruger Super Blackhawk
Thanks again!
