Re: picking the right handgun
sc1185,
When I escaped the socialist republic of NJ and entered America, I bought a S&W Sigma 9mm semi for just under 300.00. I had no complaints with it. It always went bang when the trigger pulled and that heavy pull on the trigger (8lbs compared to Glock at 5.5 or race pistols at 3) just didn't matter. I traded it 3 months later for a Glock .45acp because that was what I really wanted anyway.
Hi-points are inexpensive, but have a heavy awkward feel AND a LIFETIME WARRANTY! They work, period. They are not refined, but work well.
My advise would be to try a few different guns at a range that rents them. Find a handgun and caliber that YOU like and then buy one. If not possible, then start with an inexpensive model as you stated and, maybe, work up to something else.

Re: picking the right handgun
Go to whichgun.com They have great side by side comparisons, a good database, its easy to read, and you can narrow by various features in the search.
Also give thoughts to a quality belt and holster options at a minimum. You may also want to think about lights, lasers, and grips but cosmetics can always come later.Last edited by donotknowme; November 1st, 2013 at 12:39 AM.

The only advice to a new gun owner is to get some professional training. Most quality schools will let you rent a gun. Good quality training is your first step.

Re: picking the right handgun
That'll start some shit right there.
If you search this forum you'll see that their are people that think Glocks are the end all be all of modern pistols.
Others will think they are an ugly soulless brick.
It's fun to watch the sparks fly though.
I'm in between the two personally. I don't really care for the astetics, they are ugly' and personally I don't like the grip angle it just doesn't feel right to me. I also don't mind the fact that there is no external safety on them as I own guns without but some will be put off by this.
What Glocks are is reliable. If you want a gun that will go bang time after time for thousands of rounds you got it.
Have you shot one yet?
If it fits you well then I wouldn't hesitate to go the Glock route.

Re: picking the right handgun
i saved up and bought a gun that i would always be happy with for my first and i recommend the same. i bought a sig 220 and enjoy it still.
9mm is a good all around cartridge for a first gun as ammo is pretty available and relatively inexpensive. there are a lot of cool offerings from small companies and many rounds that almost everyone would feel comfortable defending their life with if need be.
the problem you will find is the same one that most people find: there is no perfect all around gun. often times increasing capacity sacrifices concealability and vice a versa. get something you enjoy to shoot and can afford to shoot first and foremost and see where this hobby/sport/obsession/obligation takes you.Montani Semper Liberi

Glock, Sig, and berretta are all quality firearms and any would serve you well. I would sugest finding a range that rents guns and try one of each of the models that you are considering. This will give you a much better idea of each guns feel and will help make sure you don't buy something that you don't like or can't shoot well.
