Field Dressing Saw
What's a good saw for splitting the pelvic bone when field dressing a deer?

Re: Field Dressing Saw
I use a portable universal saw that can be put on a stick and used to prune your hunting spot. And I use it to split the bone. I cant find one like this anywhere anymore.

Re: Field Dressing Saw
I don't split it until I get home. when I'm home I use a hatchet. I find it easier to remove the bladder what remains of the large intestine under controlled conditions. does anyone else to do it this way? the hardware store has folding knives that take sawzall blades I used to have one like that but I cant find it now.

Re: Field Dressing Saw
I do it when I get home. This keeps from splitting the hind quarters before dragging them out and keeps the meat clean. If you have a really sharp knife you can cut around the ass and just pull the whole thing out without splitting it. You risk puncturing the bladder so I don't do that. I like to cut on either side of where the pelvis splits to get better access to the bladder. Last deer I used the saw on my leatherman. If you have a folding pruning saw, they work well too.

I just cut the bong hole right out with a long knife. I don't believe in a Getto Cut.

Re: Field Dressing Saw
I dont use a saw at all and I dont split the pelvic bone. I see no need and if you field dress the deer and only cut just down to the pelvic bone and leave the skin to protect the meat on the hams when you drag out the meat stays much cleaner and tastes better. Then like someone else said...after getting most of the guts out. Last step is to cut out the anus, going at it from the tail, then every thing will pull out. Once all guts are out pick up the deer to drain all remaining blood through the anus as a way to "wash" out that area then using MANY paper towels clean off the tender loins and push the bloody towels out the anus as an additional cleaning step. NO NEED TO SPLIT THE PELVIS OT USE A SAW FOR ANYTHING.
