Default How difficult is it to build an AR?

I've seen a lot of threads about building AR's recently and I was wondering how difficult it is. I have no experience doing any type of gun building or repair at all. I am pretty handy ( I put together my Ikea nightstand all by myself). Is this something I could learn to do just by reading instructions found on the internet? Is it safe for someone not properly trained to do? Do I need any special tools? Should I just buy one?

Your nightstand was probally harder and takes longer.

If you plan on buying a complete upper its more assembly than build, no special tools.

Thanks for the reply. I Think I would appreciate and enjoy my AR more if I built it myself.

And.....Lycan no longer needs to type it all out. Glad you guys enjoy the AR. Building one will allow you to see how the gun works (which helps you with any malfunctions) and, with a little knowledge, you can build a better one than most shelf rifles.

Apython; Since you're in eastern Penna check out - http://www. gunrunner1000.com. That's the site for Dave Donely - the AR master in these parts. He holds an AR building "party" from time to time. Give him a call 215-529-6578. He's in Quakertown.

I built my AR on my kitchen table in 30 mins. A stripped lower, parts kit and a complete upper and your basically matching round pegs with square holes......Wait, thats not right damnit.

Seriously, your night stand was probably more complicated. Should be easy, and you will love it more having built it on your own.
