There is a man and wife south of Meyersdale that raises trained German Shepards. ...and he instructs them in German. They will not follow commands in English.

He said he does it for security purposes to minimize the risk of unauthorized commands.

That's a really small part of it but you have to train that and the training can be kinda brutal. The sound recognition is to me the most important reason. Down can be confused brown...clown....frown... where as Platz Sounds unique.
