Re: Rifles to be Banned Under new California Law on Governor Brown's Desk
While he did sign some legislation, seems Gov. Jerry Brown vetoed the centerpiece semi-auto rifle ban. From ABC News. They kept this hidden so word doesn't get out.
California Gov. Jerry Brown vetoed a bill Friday that would have banned future sales of most semi-automatic rifles that accept detachable magazines, part of a firearms package approved by state lawmakers in response to mass shootings in other states.
The governor announced signing other gun-related legislation but rejected the centerpiece bill, which would have imposed the nation's toughest restrictions on gun ownership.
Brown's veto message said it was too far-reaching. The bill by Democratic Senate President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg would have outlawed future sales of an entire class of weapons that includes most assault rifles.
It was lawmakers' latest attempt to close loopholes that have allowed manufacturers to work around previous assault weapon bans. Gun rights groups had threatened to sue if the semi-automatic weapons ban became law.
"I don't believe that this bill's blanket ban on semi-automatic rifles would reduce criminal activity or enhance public safety enough to warrant this infringement on gun owners' rights," the Democratic governor wrote in his veto message.
He also noted that California already has some of the nation's strictest gun and ammunition laws. Steinberg's office did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
The bill seeking to ban the sale of semi-automatic rifles went too far by also attempting to ban low-capacity weapons commonly used for hunting, firearms training and target shooting, along with some historical and collectible firearms, Brown said. He also objected because hundreds of thousands of legal gun owners would have to register their existing weapons as assault rifles and could never sell or transfer the weapons if it became law.
The governor's actions were a mixed bag for both gun rights groups and those seeking greater restrictions.
He signed a measure from Assemblywoman Nancy Skinner, D-Berkeley, which bans kits that allow people to turn regular ammunition magazines into high-capacity magazines.
He also signed two other pieces of legislation, which restrict the ability of mentally ill people to possess firearms.

Brown did approve a measure to ban kits used to convert standard guns into semi-automatics with large capacity magazines, which he described as closing a loophole in existing state law.
The stupidity of these "journalists" hurts my heads.
How do I convert a standard gun into a semiautomatic with a large capacity magazine? What's a standard gun - a bolt action? A lever action? A pump action?
(And yes, I know what they really mean - they're banning the ability to purchase a "parts kit" for a 30-round magazine and then building it in-state)

Because you couldn't just drive to another state and buy one. Or buy one of the millons already in CA. LOL

Re: Rifles to be Banned Under new California Law on Governor Brown's Desk
It is no different. Both of "our" PA senators voted for the Universal Background Check. We are on the edge of losing that battle too.
I lived in California for 10 years. It's where I started my gun collection and did a lot of shooting. In the 1980s, there was no better place in the world to be a gun person. Unlimited guns available, cheap ammo, newspapers took used gun ads, no background checks or transfers for used guns, unlimited places to go shoot, etc, etc.
You could drive out in the desert and shoot a 1 mile shot because it was open an you could see for miles and miles.
95% of the population of CA lives on 5% of the land, it's so wide open once out of the cities and population. That gun owners lost due to all the "common sense" laws that were instituted by the Democratic radicals was a tremendous loss. It just continues to get worse for them.
You can hate the CA antigunners but you should feel a great sympathy for the gun owners just like you in CA that were totally screwed.
It's a terrible loss for such a great place.
The trends say that what happens in CA will likely happen to your state as well. Pray it does not.
