A standoff at a Fayette County home ended after nine hours Friday night, when troopers broke into the residence and found that a man suspected of running a makeshift methamphetamine lab had killed himself.
Donald Ray Brown, no age available, of West Virginia, had broken into the home after he and his girlfriend were discovered camping near a makeshift meth lab along the Youghiogheny River, according to police.
His alleged accomplice, Jessica Lynn Phillips, 28, of Buckhannon, W.Va., was charged with aggravated assault after the pair allegedly fled and fired five shots at troopers pursuing their pickup truck, according to a criminal complaint.
A chase ensued after the two were discovered by an employee of the state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources while camping along the river at Wheeler Bottom near Connellsville, the complaint said.
Phillips, who turned 28 Friday, was also charged with criminal attempt, escape, reckless endangerment, resisting arrest, illegal possession of a 12-gauge shotgun, and other offenses. The shots were fired at police from the rear window of the truck as officers pursued the pair, the complaint said.
The chase ended when their truck crashed into a home at 500 N. Gallatin Ave. in North Union, causing extensive damage, the complaint said.
The suspects ran and then broke into a nearby home at 216 Center Ave., where Phillips surrendered a short time later. Brown barricaded himselft inside.
Officers from the Special Emergency Response team surrounded the home and other officers were stationed around the neighborhoood with rifles. Police used flash-gun powder, tear gas and a robot as they tried to make contact with Brown.
They used a battering ram before about six troopers entered the home around 9 p.m.
They emerged moments later with no one in custody. There was no gunfire.
“Donald, whatever happened today, we can work it out,” a negotiator shouted into a megaphone. “We know you're scared. We're here to help you.”
Neighbors said no one was home when the two suspects broke into the single-story, white house around noon.
An armored car lobbed a canister of tear gas into a window of the home at 6:10 p.m., but there were no signs of movement. After darkness fell, police used the robot.
