Go deeper into the woods, the average hunter goes less than 1/4 mile (city folks are even less). When I want to get away, I mount up on my mountain bike, grab a few topos and a campass, then beat it down some lonely fire road for about 30 minutes. Stash the bike along with my Peak one and my soup, fresh coffee and so on. Then head into the woods, making a day of it. I will return to the bike around lunch, then ride closer to the truck and do it again, always keeping a 1/2 mile minimum distance from any access area.
Its much more fun and I see and learn so much more. Its not the thrill of the kill, its the thrill of the hunt that drives me. I leave a general area map with my wife at home, with general UTM cords where I plan on being all day, should I fail to make it home.
