Yet another example that constant exposure does not an expert make

RIVERDALE, Utah — The police chief in Riverdale accidentally shot himself in an ankle while demonstrating how to dislodge a jammed handgun.

Chief Dave Hansen was taken to McKay-Dee Hospital in Ogden for surgery.

The 54-year-old chief accidentally fired a gun during a training exercise inside a conference room at Riverdale police headquarters.

A fire captain and Riverdale Mayor Bruce Burrows confirmed the chief shot himself Saturday in an ankle bone. They said he was trying to fix a gun with a jammed round when the bullet fired.

Riverdale police officers carry .40-caliber pistols.

Hospital supervisor Rohn Larsen said Hansen was in stable condition Sunday. Larsen said he couldn't reveal which ankle — left or right — the chief shot.

A Weber County dispatcher said nobody from the Riverdale police department was available Sunday to release any information on the accident. A patrol officer on duty Sunday said he didn't know anything about it.

The chief's brother, a state lawmaker, said Hansen is a 23-year veteran and chief of the Riverdale police force since 2006.

Rep. Neil Hansen, D-Ogden, said he regularly goes target practicing with his brother and described him as safety-conscious.

"I've never seen him do anything reckless

What part of "point in a safe direction" don't some people understand? Pointing it at any part of your own body is NOT a safe direction.

I'm gonna give chiefy the benifit of the doubt and say he was indeed aiming at the floor, who knows, maybe he just shifted a bit and got the ankle. Bad day for all involved I'm sure. Goes to show that accidents happen, no matter how familiar you are or how often you shoot/handle firearms it can still happen to you.

What part of keep your finger off the trigger dont they understand? (Or are they going to pretend the gun just went off?) If the police chief is breaking multiple handling rules during his training sessions you have to wonder about his subordinates.

Hopefully, they are more gifted than the chief.

I'm curious to know the make of the firearm in question. The article only mentions the caliber.

    Riverdale city code

5-2-3: FIREARMS AND WEAPONS: A. Discharge Prohibited: It shall be unlawful for any person to discharge a firearm or bow and arrow within this city, except in self-defense or in the case of any peace officer in the discharge of his duties, or any authorized official of the city for rodent control that has been approved by the city, or at authorized ranges. (1985 Code § 13-10-5.8; amd. 2001 Code)

Is a Negligent Discharge part of the "discharge (lol) of his duties"?

I have always been taught since day one to never point a gun at any part of any body unless I intend to shoot it. He must have had different training.
