Suggestions for an IDPA Holster
I currently carry an XD 9 in a Serpa. I would like to get into IDPA and I do not think the Serpa is my best holster for that. So, any suggestions for a holster for an XD 9 4" for IDPA shooting.

Re: Suggestions for an IDPA Holster
Why would the SERPA not be a good IDPA holster?
I shoot IDPA with mine regularly. The whole point of IDPA is to shoot the gear you normally carry.

Re: Suggestions for an IDPA Holster
Yes, and I intended to use it but being new to competition I would like to learn as easy as I can. Started to practice and find that I often miss or do not press the retention button correctly. Maybe it is a matter of evaluating different holster positions and I am sure practice, practice, practice will help but I am trying to eliminate improper or excessive movements. I have small hands so to get a good grip I have to draw from the holster with my thumb being forced down farther along my hip to get my index finger on the button with just the tip other wise the gun comes up with a terrible grip. I have to kind of push the gun away from my hip and it seems to be one more thing to do that I do not want to in a timed event.
I would certainly like to save my money so if you have any tips, please offer them.

Re: Suggestions for an IDPA Holster
I agree with Patriot. So you are not looking for a new holster for IDPA. You are looking for a new holster AND you will use it for IDPA. If you like the Kydex and quality of the Serpa, but not the retention system, you can order a BlackHawk holster without the level 2 tetention (the button). The Blackhawk level 1 retention holsters run about $30. Here is an example of one: http://www.cdcgear.com/Shop/tabid/14...2/Default.aspx
Also, for just a couple of bucks more, you can go with a Bladetech. Lots of IDPA guys use them. http://www.topgunsupply.com/product.php?productid=264VEGETARIAN: Native American word meaning "bad hunter"

Re: Suggestions for an IDPA Holster
Your hand being all they way onto the grip is a good thing. You should only pull the weapon after your hand has a firing grip as opposed to pulling the gun and repositioning your strong hand before firing.
I would say practice.
If you can't reliably draw under the stress of a timer you will not be able to reliably draw in a real life lethal force encounter.
5000 to 6000 reps typically establishes a good "muscle memory"foundation on which occasional practice should keep fresh
I found the SERPA to be just as fast as my other carry rigs. Not as fast as a competition rig, but that has more to do with the open front, lower drop and sharper angle of those holsters.

Re: Suggestions for an IDPA Holster
I just started shooting competitions this year, but I'm using an XD9 in a Serpa. I'd recommend spending the time practicing and getting used to the holster you have instead of spending money on another holster. Unless, of course, you don't plan on using the Serpa at all anymore. As Pa Patriot said, if you can't draw good from it in competition, you're not going to draw from it in an "Oh shit" situation.

Just buy an Uncle Mike's kydex paddle holster and go shooting. Cheaper than a Bladetech and just as fast (I have both).

Re: Suggestions for an IDPA Holster
I am not sure if Uncle Mike's holsters are legal for IDPA. I seem to recall hearing that they were not, same with Fobus. Don't hold me to it, just do some research. I have a Safariland that I like with the M&P. It was a little pricey though. I believe reg. price was around $70.00 from Mid-Way.

Re: Suggestions for an IDPA Holster
Bladetech and 5.11 put out the Revolution holster - 29.99.
Fobus has holsters in the $25 - $30 dollar range.
I personally like the Comp-Tac that I have for my M&P. It's in the $60 range.
I don't agree with the others here - if you want a different holster for IDPA go for it if that will make it more comfortable/easier to compete.
