Re: newbie looking for help
First thing first enroll your self in a credible defensive pistol class. Next would be to pick a handgun hat suits you, go to stores and fondle all different types of guns. Try and find your self a place that rents guns to shoot and shoot the piss out of as many different guns as catch your eye. Then practice practice, practice, not only is it a hell of a lot of fun it is crucial to you being able to defend yourself if the need should arise. Just a few starter tips.
When injustice becomes law, rebellion becomes duty!

Good advice, Knighthawk.
Also, know your rights!

Follow the advice of the elders... much they do know. But really, know your rights and the law, carry a pamphlet or two with you, practice lots, and enjoy/protect our 2nd amendment.
oh yea, almost forgot... Welcome to the forum! great place to chit chat and learn."Unus ut caput capitis"

Re: newbie looking for help
These two links can get you started on some basics. I agree with the other posters who suggested taking a training course in handgun safety. Also, there are many safety and justification threads on this forum that you may find helpful.

Re: newbie looking for help
Welcome to the forum! My advice is going to be the same as everyone else here has given so far.
Only thing I might add is: If you're going to carry, make it a choice of lifestyle. Better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.

1st. Welcome aboard. The advice given so far is great. Find a weapon you like, that feels comfy in your hand, shoots well and you will actually carry if thats what your gonna do with it. Also try a few different carry options if you can. IWB, OWB, CC vs OC and so forth. A big plus 1 for knowing the laws and your rights.
Have fun, stay safe. We'll be looking for you at the OC dinners soon.

bek5,
Welcome to the forum.
Don't be afraid to ask questions. The search bar at the top of the page may be helpful too.
Here's a good book that has a lot of good info:

Is there any particular area that you are looking for advice?
You didn't mention it... do you already have a firearm?
Oh, and ignore that post above about becoming addicted to this site.
It hasn't affected me in the least.
I called to check my ZIP CODE!....DY-NO-MITE!!!
