Default Quick Question from Philly Newbie

    Hello Everyone,

As mentioned in the title I'm new to the area and I have a question about transporting firearms (handguns & Rifles ) in the city. I'm originally from NC and I have a Utah Carry permit . I want to know what the laws are on transporting my firearms to and from a range. While i dont intend on carrying in the city for now i do go to the range a bit (about once a week) & reading here it seems like I may need a carry PA permit to have the firearms in my car. Is this true? Will my Utah permit be enough?

I would appreciate any clarity on the issue.

    Thanks ,

    Wallo

If you live in PA now, you can transport to and from the range unloaded in the trunk..provided you don't stop for fuel/food/anything. If you have a license from any other state you can transport loaded handguns (not long guns, I believe those must stay unloaded in the trunk) on your person.

    IANAL, just trying to help.

There are some great stickies to read and this has been addressed in other posts here (if you can find them).

    From 6106 exceptions:

    (11) Any person while carrying a firearm in any vehicle, which person possesses a valid and lawfully issued license for that firearm which has been issued under the laws of the United States or any other state.
With any permit you can carry a firearm (handgun) in a vehicle loaded.
You have a Utah permit. Good there

YOU CAN'T conceal outside of of a vehicle but you could OC (except Philly).
Edit: If Utah permit has reciprocity with PA, he can carry CC

So.... Drive around with a loaded firearm? Good
Loaded long gun in vehicle (NO!)

Being a PA resident means nothing...
No requirement at all to store in trunk
In a vehicle is in a vehicle

Why can't he carry his gun concealed on his Utah CFP? Am I really missing something here?

Yeah, I guess I glazed over his Utah permit..and I wasn't aware being a PA resident meant nothing. I'm not sure why I thought it did.

He'd have to have firearms unloaded and in the truck and only when transporting to/from point of sale/range/gunsmith without the Utah (or any other states) permit, I believe...that's what I was trying to say.

    edited for accuracy.

If the Utah permit has reciprocity then yes, he can carried concealed too

Just stay away (1000') from schools as it doesn't cover you

Your wording is off... Travel to/from range is an exception for someone without a permit.
It is illegal to carry a firearm in a vehicle in PA (loaded or unloaded) unless you have a permit from any state or you meet an exception

Take out the "in the trunk" part. The gun can be anywhere

Yes, PA and Utah have a reciprocity agreement, and have had it for quite some time. OP, you're fine to carry concealed or openly on your Utah CFP. Make sure you heed Jon's advice and stay 1,000 feet away from schools.
