A man was arrested today after he allegedly fired a gun at an Atlanta-area elementary school, sending hundreds of panicked children running out of the building for cover, officials said.

No students at Ronald E. McNair Discovery Learning Academy in Decatur, Ga., were injured and all have been accounted for, Dekalb County School District spokesman Quinn Hudson told ABCNews.com.

A lone white male, believed to be in his 20s, was arrested this afternoon soon after reports of gunfire, Hudson said.

School officials could not confirm how many rounds were fired, or if the shooting took place inside or outside the school.

The suspected gunman may have been carrying an AK-47, according to ABC affiliate WSB-TV in Atlanta.

A woman identified as Antoinette who worked in the school's office called the news channel, after the gunman told her to call and tell the media he wanted journalists to film him killing poloice.

Lacey LeCroy, an assignment editor at WSB, said she could hear gunfire over the line. Eventually, she said, Antoinette returned to the phone and said the gunman was in custody.

The shooting came on just the second week of classes at the charter school. All of the school's 600 students were safely evacuated to a nearby Walmart to await their parents or buses.

School safety and gun control were again thrust into the national spotlight last year when Adam Lanza, 20, killed 20 students and six adult staff members at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.

It would be absolutely impossible for the shooting to take place in or near a school as that is a mandated gun free zone.
