Default M1A: Lack of copper fouling in stainless match barrel

Recently took ownership of Springfield Armory “M1A National Match” SS barrel, have fired 375 rds. (cleaned gas cylinder at 315 rds.) Clean barrel every session (avg 70 rds per). The barrel doesn’t seem to get copper fouled. I never get any “Blue” on patches not even “Green”. I've used Sweets 7.62, Shooter’s Choice cooper remover, and Hoppes “Benchrest” (not at the same time of course), following manufacturers directions. My 22-250 Chrome moly factory barrel needs copper removal every 20 rds, but shoots at under 1/4 M.O.A. up to 60 rds. This is my first stainless steel match barrel, is this normal?

I'm no expert but I have owned quite a few M1A rifles and I have always used Black Hills Moly coated Match ammo and have experienced little fouling as well. What type of ammo are you shooting?

Sorry forgot to mention that. Usually 155 grain HPBT Sierra or American Eagle 150 grain FMJBT, as yet never Moly. Not complaining about the lack of copper fouling but am curious.

I'm wondering If it has something to do with the chrome lined bore?

It's not a military chrome lined barrel. It's a stainless steel Springfield Armory barrel. Any other ideas or am I just lucky?

SS barrels don't foul up barrels like regular steel barrels. That is one of the reasons why some shooters like the SS barrels. I like SS barrels, but I like the ones that are bead blasted so the barrel is not so shiny.

I think the stainless is the reason. Good shooting, I have owned 5 M1A rifles and never had a problem with any of them you will enjoy it immensely. Go to Fultonarmory.com for M1A M14 goodies.

I appreciate the input a great deal. I'll keep an eye on the copper fouling and see if it increases with wear.

Thanks for the tip on Fulton Armory.

Thanks again for all your help.

I think it is the SS BBL as well. I have a loaded SS M1A. I do get foulings. I will say this. If you bought it used the other owner might have used moly bullets. if I am not mistaken they line the BBL and make cleaning easy as well and little fouling.

sj139, look into a buffer technologies recoil buffer for the M1A. It helps eliminate the metal to metal contact between the op-rod and reciever. It cuts down on wear and recoil with no effect on velocity or accuracy. Very easy to install too.
