Default Game Lands - Hunting License

I need a place to shoot more than a pistol and I believe that you need a hunting license to use the state game lands. With that said, and please forgive me as I know someone will get pissy with me, where do I get a hunting license? I don't hunt and I'm not a native Western PA'er...

    Thanks!

Walmart, Gander Mt., most any sporting goods store. You can also get a permit to use the ranges, but a hunting license is less expensive.

I assume you mean the SGL ranges. You can't just go to a SGL and shoot at random.

If you never held a Hunting license and you are not recently discharged from the military, you would have to take a hunter safety class before you can buy a license.

You could buy the shooting range permit for $30.00. You can buy the permit right from the PA Game Commissions website.

Thanks, the hunter safety course slipped my mind after all these years.

    Link to SGL range permit.

Pros, you can instantly pay and get the permit. No meetings and drawn out application process.

Cons. Lots of restrictions on how you can shoot. Max 6 in pistol 3 in rifle at any time. Generally a lower standard of shooters with safe firearm handling skills.

    Link to rules.

Joining a club will give you better facilities than the SGL range and generally speaking safer shooters.

I know a club is the best option, but I got a new rifle and want to shoot it! Up until recently I knew no one who belonged to a club so getting I to one was difficult. Hopefully in a few weeks it won't be an issue!

I was up there yesterday morning for the first time. At the rifle range, when I got there, there was two other guys, looked as if one was teaching, one was learning, and another guy showed up and was at the farther end. Was nice with no crowd!

The pistol range had a few more people on it, but not to the point of it being annoying...
