No. Worry about shot placement, not about whether or not you should carry a .40 or 9mm. Get the 26, you'll be able to afford to shoot it. Being proficient is what you need to be worried about.

    Shot placement is the thing.

I have carried my G26 for years... OWB in a Don Hume open top 721.

Terrific set up. Comfort and conceal.

That said, I have shot my friends full size Glock .40 cal, and I know I don't want to shoot that thing in a compact size Glock. The big one kicked like a mule.

I'd probably let out a girl scream with each .40 fired from the G27. ;x)

With full metal jacket ammunition, yes. With a quality hollow point, not so much.

9mm Speer Gold Dot 124gr +p will perform about as well as 40 out of that size barrel.

    Yup...

    Orrr

    Winchester ranger Ts

    Federal HST 147grains

    Remmington Golden Sabres

    Corbon Powrballs

    Hornady Critical Defense/zombies

Cpl others as well but that list is tried n true performers. I think NYPD uses the old gold dots Speer lawmans as well as the golden sabres.

Most hardcore ballistic ppl i run into say the ranger t is the new black talon and the best round to go with but imo the dif n those rds listed is negligible to say the least...

    This and this.

Like shaft said check out TNoutdoors9 and other ballistics gel channels. With JHP ammo from the same manufacture, out of the same barrel length, you might get 1/2" deeper penetration, and/or .02" more expansion, but in the grand scheme of things is the increased recoil and ammo expense worth it to you?

I just bought a Shield in .40 and the recoil is a little more harsher than a similar 9mm, and I'm finding out that the ammo is a PITA to find. That said, I also shoot .44 mag so I'm already a recoil whore and I'm use to paying big money for factory ammo.
