    Default So I bought a DPMS A3

Purchased my first AR Monday. DPMS A3 Lite. Haven't had a chance to get to the range yet, but I like it so far. Only things I've bought so far was two Pmags and the MBUIS rear sight. Eventually going to get an Eotech and the Magpul furniture. And of course more mags and ammo.

What do I need to know? I'm not a big rifles guy.
Is steel case ammo that bad? Yes, I always clean my guns.

Congrats on the purchase and I second the steel case question. It is cheaper, but what harm will it do?

Steel case is fine -- if your rifle doesnt like it, you need a better rifle

If your really new to rifles, get some formal or informal instruction. Basic firearms safety and marksmanship do apply to any type of firearm but some instruction on rifles specifically will at a minimum keep you from forming bad habits.

There is a recent thread on PAFOA about AR cleaning:

The only real documented issue with steel ammo is shooting steel and then brass.

Educational Zone #18 - Shooting Wolf steel-cased Ammo in an AR15

Today's Question: Does shooting Wolf ammo in an AR result in the "Lacquer" or "Poly" being deposited in the chamber, resulting in stuck cases?

My buddy Tman and I do a lot of shooting. I had previously shot a lot of Wolf 5.56 ammo (steel cased) through my Model One uppers and had no problems whatsoever. But one day, I followed-up a session with a few rounds of South African ball. The first round stuck in the chamber and the rim was pulled off by the extractor.

It's actually not the lacquer that causes the issues. Its the carbon buildup because the steel case does not expand fully. Follow that up with a brass case that does and the carbon buildup causes a failure to extract.
