Re: Some AR questions
I just recently got a Bushmaster XM-15e2 which is essentially a M4 with a removable carry handle sight on top.
Bushmasters lack some "milspec" parts like a 1 and 7 twist barrel and goes with the 1 and 9 which really doesn't affect anything unless you are shooting heavy grain bullets(stuff in the 68-75g range) but some experimenting can see if your rifle can stabilize the heavier rounds anyways. Doesn't really matter since most stuff is 55g which 1 and 9 is perfectly able to fire.
Another key non-milspec part on Bushmasters is the buttstock tube. It isn't staked so it can be replaced with one but it is rather irrelevant, but just something you need to remember when considering a new buttstock to throw on it.
I know the carbon 15 models are somewhat similar but might have a different rail system or something along those lines going on. They aren't bad rifles and mine operates flawlessly, and does what it needs to do so I'm not complaining. Probably the most important thing to inspect in these rifles is to make sure the lugs on the gas key are properly staked otherwise that can lead to problems.
I don't think you can go wrong with the M&P-15 either.

Re: Some AR questions
You cant go wrong with SW if it was properly priced. But at above 1K its hugely overpriced. I think these were $700 before panic.

Re: Some AR questions
I bought a S&W M&P-15 Sport for $720 at the height of the panic. Finding any AR anywhere near MSRP was impossible (low end ARs for $1500 at gun shows), so when I saw it, I jumped on it.
The following "negatives" are a non-issue for me:
- No dust cover
- No forward assist
- No modular trigger guard
- Non-insulated forend hand guard
- 1/9 barrel twist (I do wish they kept it 1/8, seemed like a great compromise.)
Unless the above are important to you, I think it's a great buy (especially if you can find it for less than $700). Use the money you saved for ammo, extra Pmags and range time. Maybe an affordable red dot sight like this:

I really wasn't in the market for a rifle when I bought it. Really glad I got it though, it's a whole lot of fun. Good luck!Last edited by del48; July 9th, 2013 at 10:48 PM.

Colt with match trigger for $900. Not bad IMHO.
S&W M&P 15 Sport 556 $625

Re: Some AR questions
Beware that Sport is the CA compliant version with a 10 round fixed magazine and bullet button.

Re: Some AR questions
I just watched a video of an AR with a bullet button. What a pain in the butt! Avoid if you can, wow!

Re: Some AR questions
I would imagine you would swap out the parts to put a normal mag release in there. But then that starts to eat into the price a bit. I would shop around first. You also only get one ten round mag. Good for bench rest shooting (or possibly hunting outside PA), but not much else.

Re: Some AR questions
Those prices blow. Gun Broker is a great place to check out the going rates of common guns.
I started a similar thread here. If you don't want to peruse it, I can summarize.
If you don't plan on buying any more AR's in the future, get a nice one to begin with.
The majority seem to suggest that the 6920 is the best bang for the buck if you don't want to build one yourself and plan on keeping it mostly stock.
What optics do you want to put on it? This will affect which model would be a good choice. You can never have enough horsepower or ammunition.

Re: Some AR questions
Colt being a standard means there are rifles below standard and above standard. There are also rifles that are same quality as Colt but you wont be paying extra 100-200$ for colt roll marks.
