Default Don't ever let a good friend convince you he can fix wood

Don't ever let your good friend....well, former good friend tell you he can do a great job on your cracked stock. He convinced me I would never see the crack in the stock again!!!. Yeah....like this:

The guy said he pinned it. Didn't happen. All he did was hog out some wood behind the crack, then filled it with accraglass, then put it back together. So.....now when you shoot it, (well...not now because it's getting fixed by me...and if I fix it with a hatchet it will look better than this crap) the recoil would constantly pound at the crack!!! When he "fixed" it, the crack was only half the size it is now.

You are applying too broadly the lesson you were supposed to learn from this misfortune. Sorry to hear of your bad experience with one friend.

A cat who walks across a very hot stove top will never walk across a hot stove top again, but she will never walk across a cold one either. I've seen it.
While many claim to support the right, precious few support the practice.

Better off using carpenter's glue, the bonded area winds up being stronger than the wood.

Should have been "she." I guarantee that a good female friend could fix your wood just fine.

Sometimes it's just easier to buy a Boyds stock and start over......

This stock is for a Winchester Model 88. It's tough to find 'em and after market stocks just look like......aftermarket stocks. I'll fix it right and it may...or may not be seen. I've done some good work with walnut stocks in the past....or I should say, in the years since I retired. A little confidence goes a long way.

Sorry about your "friend" and your stock.

I found this pretty good article from Fine Woodworking magazine and have it saved. It is titled "How strong is your glue?", pretty good article on wood glues and a test they did.

Article here in PDF format: http://www.titebond.com/news_article...Your_Glue.aspx

It is only 5 pages, but has some great info for anyone needed a stock (or other wood) repair.
