    Default Old Colt Magazines

My Dad just bought a Colt Model 1903 and we were wondering why the very top of the magazine is unfinished, in the white. The seller told us that all old Colt magazines are this way. Anybody know why?

The particular blueing process used by Colt on their mags back in the day was thought to be detrimental to spring steel that would be under regular or constant load. The mag lips were not blued because Colt did not want the properties of the steel in the area of the mag lips to be negatively affected. The mag bodies were not the issue; they didn't want the feed lips to crack.
