Re: Past vs. Present
I think the biggest problem we have with it today were that the Great Depression, WW2, and the Cold War were back to back to back, forming 50 consecutive years where people saw government as being essential in helping them survive, first from starvation, then from the Germans and Japanese, then from the Soviet nuclear threat. If at any point that had let up, people would have been able to see FDR's expansion of government power and erosion of the Constitution for what it was and stood up against it to see its repeal. Prior to that, people saw themselves as the determiner of their own destiny, or if they needed any help it was from their church and family. But the so called "Democratic consensus" years killed off a lot of the liberty impulse and we're struggling against the fruition of all that lost time becoming entrenched as the status quo. Anyone in school from 1935 to 1985 was raised on the idea that getting along with government was a good thing rather than being skeptical of it. Government intervention was good, a standing army that's capable of mass murder against the population should they disobey was somehow good, any bad law was good so long as it had been around for a while, etc. This is in complete contrast to the ideas of the Founders which we now see the importance of when the threats to our liberty are so much more obvious.

"To my mind it is wholly irresponsible to go into the world incapable of preventing violence, injury, crime, and death. How feeble is the mindset to accept defenselessness. How unnatural. How cheap. How cowardly. How pathetic." -- Ted Nugent

Re: Past vs. Present
THOSE THAT FORGET THE PAST ARE BOUND TO RE-LIVE IT,!!
And it appears we are doing just that. The colonies were abused by a distant foreign government. The citizens of today's America are being abused by a government which has distanced itself from the average person. They spend money like fools, pass taxes without asking if we can afford it, start more govt welfare programs than we can afford to fund, and basically don't give a damn about the average hard working, tax paying, citizen. They keep telling us that they can not find any way to cut wasteful spending, but never have a problem finding a new way to tax us.
The federal govt has become the royal crown, ruling in an abusive manner, caring little or none if the commoners can afford to pay for the ridiculous wasteful spending they decree we must support, whether we agree with it or not. Maybe it is time to re-play the past!!I prefer the sweet taste of freedom over the bland flavor of socialism.
