Tomorrow at midnight, we’re finalizing the list of signatures that will appear on the homepage of USA Today with our Declaration of Independence from Gun Violence.

But we don’t have your name yet.

Last year, I became a survivor of gun violence when I was shot in a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado.

Since I recovered and left the hospital, I’ve been fighting for meaningful change that will prevent others from going through what happened to me -- and what happens to people all across this country every day.

Mayors Against Illegal Guns and Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America put together a July 4th declaration that calls for legislation that will:

Require criminal background checks for all gun sales
Get military-style assault weapons and high-capacity magazines off our streets and
Make gun trafficking a federal crime with serious penalties
