Default Calling Animalmother85...and anyone else who cares to answer

Animalmother85, as per my post "new carry in 40" you stated that you didn't want to derail my thread by stating why 9mm is better than 40. As a spinoff I started this because my curiosity is peaked. I am always interested in other opinions and learning anything new. So fire away. Anyone else interested in giving me their opinions on the matter are also respectfully invited to answer if they want.

.40 is nice if you like spending 30% more to do the exact same thing as 9mm. You should buy .45. I hear that .45 will kill a man if you get within 2' of hitting him.

15 years ago there was a difference in calibers and how defensive ammo performed. That gap is basically gone today and shot placement counts a whole lot more than caliber. I'd much rather be missed with a .40 than shot with a .22.

Whats better chevy, ford or dodge....obviously chevy, but seriously with bullet technology these days the difference between 9, .40, and .45 are is the same as the difference between the three trucks, its personal preference.

Some people like .45 because it has more "knock down power" but as I said before I dont think that matters much with new hollow points (just my opinion). Don't get me wrong I am not saying .45 isn't more powerful than 9mm but I think the difference is not as big as people think.

Some people like 9mm because the may not have the power of a .45 but they can hold 16 rounds in a compact.

Lastly, some people like the best of both worlds, a little more power than a 9mm and better capacity than a .45

The trouble with the internet is that everybody is an expert and has an opinion that is often unsubstantiated with data. Which is better - 9mm, .40 S&W, or .45 acp - is a fairly old argument and the data supports whichever caliber you favor. You might as well as which is the best flaver of ice cream - chocolate, vanilla or strawberry - because the data again supports whatever you like.

If you do a substantial search looking at the various types of data, you will find that the answer is all over the place. Look for data such as:

    1. one shot stop capability
    2. velocity versus energy
    3. ballistic gel penetration
    4. Emergency room data showing all of the above
    5. expansion relative to JHP versus ball ammo
    6. "fill in the blank"

To me, it is which caliber do I THINK is best in which pistol do I shoot the best and conceals the best.

Btw, my answer to that question is Colt Commander in .45 acp.

I switched to a Ruger SR9 and I find 9mm to be faster back on target, due to less recoil. I can send more downrange faster. But my .45 holds a tighter group since tuning it and setting it up as a target pistol rather than a carry pistol. But the difference isnt enough to make me worry.
18 rounds of 9mm jhp +p in one magazine says we probably wont be the one doing the mag changes if there ever was a situation. And if I am then I have 34 more rounds in 2 spare mags. 52 rounds. I would have to carry 7- 7 round standard magazines +1 to get close in a 1911 platform
so as far as 9mm? overall performance and capacity won me over

Personally, I'd shoot whatever caliber I shot best.

From someone with far greater knowledge of bullet performance than I could ever have, I offer this:

    - in 9mm, a 124-129gr traveling ~1250fps
    - in .40, 135gr ~1300fps
    - in .357mag, 125gr, ~1450fps

The speed to weight ration is similar as is performance.

all of these have street proven data that indicates they performed very well at stopping a threat quickly.

I have tried .40cal, but can't shoot it for beans... jumps around like a flea on a hot brick. I shoot .44mag & spl best, but can't conceal it in summer.
"say Eddie, is that a rabbit in your pants or are you just happy to see me?" from Warner Bros. Roger Rabbit. you get the idea.

    What do you shoot best?
