Can a 16 year old own a firearm if his/her parents buy it for them.
I am wondering if a 16 year old can own a firearm if his/her parents buy it for them. I have heard different things from all the people i have asked.
I would appreciate it if you could respond, Thank You!

What kind of firearm do you have in mind? Are we talking .22 single-shot, bolt action, a Saiga 12, or new, mint, in the box BAR?

Short answer would be that is the parent's gun until the person turns 18 for a rifle or shotgun or 21 for a handgun.

To add onto GL001's post - the term "firearm" that the law is discussing refers to this below.
"Firearm." Any pistol or revolver with a barrel length less than 15 inches, any shotgun with a barrel length less than 18 inches or any rifle with a barrel length less than 16 inches, or any pistol, revolver, rifle or shotgun with an overall length of less than 26 inches. The barrel length of a firearm shall be determined by measuring from the muzzle of the barrel to the face of the closed action, bolt or cylinder, whichever is applicable.RIP: SFN, 1861, twoeggsup, Lambo, jamesjo, JayBell, 32 Magnum, Pro2A, mrwildroot, dregan, Frenchy, Fragger, ungawa, Mtn Jack, Grapeshot, R.W.J., PennsyPlinker, Statkowski, Deanimator, roland, aubie515

Re: Can a 16 year old own a firearm if his/her parents buy it for them.
There is no legal age to possess a rifle or shotgun. ...not even under federal law. A person needs to be 18 to buy from or transfer through a FFL for a rifle or shotgun. And needs to be 21 to buy from or transfer through a FFL for a handgun, receiver, or other firearm.
Federal law prohibits the private transfer or giving of a handgun to a person under 18yo(certain exceptions).
PA prohibits the mere possession of a "firearm" by someone under 18(a few exceptions). For folks between 18 and 21 - transfers can be made between the youth and one of the exempted persons(parent, spouse, grandparent) whether they be gifts, purchases, trades, etc without paperwork. For transfers between folks that aren't of those relations - the "firearm" must be transferred at a willing sheriff(good luck finding one).RIP: SFN, 1861, twoeggsup, Lambo, jamesjo, JayBell, 32 Magnum, Pro2A, mrwildroot, dregan, Frenchy, Fragger, ungawa, Mtn Jack, Grapeshot, R.W.J., PennsyPlinker, Statkowski, Deanimator, roland, aubie515

Re: Can a 16 year old own a firearm if his/her parents buy it for them.
GL, I have another question. 6110.1 does not define firearm, however 6110.2 basically states the definition of a firearm in this section is any weapon designed to expel a projectile by the action of an explosive.
Now my question is are 6110.1 and 6110.2 considered the same section (6110) so the definition in 6110.2 would also cover 6110.1 or are they separate sections so the definition of a firearm in 6110.1 would revert back to the handgun, sbr, sbs definition found in 6102 since it's not defined?
Looks like Knight was typing at the same time as me, lol.Last edited by jerkin; July 1st, 2013 at 11:42 PM.
