Sold to FFL- no paperwork. ???
I recently sold one of my handguns to a local gun shop and we didn't do any paperwork. I didn't think of it until after I left the shop. I also thought as a dealer he would know the process.
What's the scoop?

I'd say that he knows the process..
The dealer is exempt of the transfer paperwork when HE buys guns. He need only add the gun to his bound book.
And had you sold to a private person via a FFL or sheriff you still wouldn't get a copy. In that situation the buyer gets a copy of the SP4-113, the dealer keeps a copy, and the PSP gets a copy. With the 4473 the dealer is the sole person that has a copy.RIP: SFN, 1861, twoeggsup, Lambo, jamesjo, JayBell, 32 Magnum, Pro2A, mrwildroot, dregan, Frenchy, Fragger, ungawa, Mtn Jack, Grapeshot, R.W.J., PennsyPlinker, Statkowski, Deanimator, roland, aubie515

Re: Sold to FFL- no paperwork. ???
When I was dealer back in the flintlock days, I could add it to the books - inventory - when I got a chance, not always right then and there.
Probably just did the same thing. Did you get a receipt?
Doesn't have to be like it has morphed into here at our own classified boards; DNA proof, letters from parents, teachers, congressmen, Lt Col Canadian Forces proof, bill of sales, bill of lading, bill of materials, blood test results, SAT results, MSAT and LSAT results.
Selling a gun to a dealer is 10x easier. All of my guns are lubed with BACON GREASE.

Here's my understanding and I could be wrong.
He doesn't have to do paperwork other than a receipt for what he paid you. I traded one of my guns in and he did the same. It's similar to when you trade/sale a vehicle to a dealer. They do not put it in there name and when the paperwork is filled out.
I could be wrong

He doesn't even have to do a receipt.
Most bound books have a column for the purchased price.
I know of no legal requirement to give a receipt.
However, if asked, I will give one.
( I was a FFL and now help my former partner out when need be)
Some shops give one depending on how they keep records.
This is where every gun owner should keep their own records.
I have a plain old notebook that I keep with a record of what and where and for how much I purchased something.
If I sell, then I put the sold price and to whom and when.
I also take a picture of the gun and jot down any distinguishing marks and keep these in a folder.
I don't always put a name in, the buyer or sellers phone number, internet user name and website they are on is sometimes used.
If I pay with a money order through the mail, I make a copy before mailing it and print out any internet correspondence as well and keep it in the folder with the pictures.
This book is handy if you ever have a gun stolen as well.
Taking photos and storing them on a website like Photobucket makes a good free and accessible record as well.
Take a pic, upload it to your private account and add a description.
Done.

your dealer must have your name and address in file. he is bound by ATF regulations to enter your info as the source of the firearm acquisition in his book within 24 hours of taking it into inventory. if he does not he is violating federal law. i know this because i have an FFL type 1 dealer's liscense.

Of course, you are correct, I didn't mention it because I took it as a given that the OP gave the dealer his information, just that the dealer didn't give the OP a receipt.
But it was well worth mentioning for sure.
OP, did the dealer take your name and address? A copy of your DL?
Like justashooter said, this is all he needed to do. If he did that, all is good.

Re: Sold to FFL- no paperwork. ???
When selling any firearm to a dealer, I always request a receipt clearly listing the item being sold, amount and date of transaction, the firearm's serial number, and the FFL's business name and FFL number just for my records. I make a point to ask for this. Just want to be sure I'm protecting myself.
