Default "Dad that man has a gun like yours."

I was in the check out line at walmart with my 3 year old son the other day and he spotted the glock on the hip of the man in front of us. He was oc with one of those black nylon holsters from walmart with the mag pouch sewn on the front of it. The retention strap wasnt over the gun. He also had a double mag pouch on the other hip.

    My first thoughts.
    1. Wow my boy knows his glocks.
    2. I wonder where he got all that ammo?
    3. If you oc should use some kind of retention holster?

I would like to know some of your thoughts on the holster issue and what holster do you use for oc?

    To each their own.

    My own personal preference:

I only OC around the house or around my development. When I do, I make sure I have a quality retention holster (it's a leather Bianchi with a thumb break, FBI cant, two belt loops).

My philosophy is that the holster does a few important things: 1: helps keep my gun in MY custody 2: prevents the trigger from being pulled inadvertantly 3: protects my nice Sig from the elements.

The first two roles of my holster are a matter of life and death. Therefore, I make sure the holster I use is of good quality.

Just my own philosophy, everyone else's mileage may vary.

Retention is basically a must-have for OC in public, as far as I'm concerned. It is not a guarantee that a capable person will be unable to disarm you, but it makes it that much harder.

For OC I have leather OWB holsters with a thumb break. I have been known to carry my Sig 239 in a galco OWB holster, which has no retention, but I only carry that way around home or at the office, where I am pretty much at my desk all day (for now).

That's great your kid can recognize the gun. Hopefully you are also very diligent about safety training for your young'un(s).

    Cheers,
    afd

    Cool story!

Usually any holster that has a mag pouch incorporated into it is complete garbage.

    1:
    2: Must've been hoarding it.
3: I think it is a prudent choice to use a retention holster for OC.

It's amazing your son wasn't traumatized by the sight of a real gun! I mean, the GI Joe gun a kid brought to a school a few weeks ago had children terrified for their lives!

I recognized the holster because i own one that i bought the same day i bought my first pistol. I use it for range use and occasionally around the house. I am looking for a nice owb holster to wear while hiking but haven't came across one that i like yet.

I use one of these on hikes with my 1911, I must say they are sturdy, reliable, comfortable, and the snap retention works well.

These days I think we need level 3 retention on our mag pouches... They'll leave the gun and run away with the ammo!
