If you are new to 1911's, and I believe you are, I'd stick with an all steel 1911. 1911's with aluminum frames can be quite jumpy in the hands with quite a lot of muzzle rise and recoil. An all steel 1911 is more durable and easier to shoot due to the increased weight. Many would recommend your first 1911 be the traditional government size......that is, one with a 5inch barrel. I personally love my Commander sized 1911's......I have a Colt Lightweight Commander (27oz unloaded), and an Ed Brown Executive Carry (35oz unloaded). The Colt as you can tell by the weight difference, has an aluminum frame. My pistols all have ambi safeties since I'm a left handed shooter. 1911's are renowned for their great ergonomics, great triggers and accuracy. If you stick with a Commander sized or government sized pistol you should not have any reliability issues. You can't go wrong with a Colt or a Springfield Armory for regular production pistols and they will cost you $1,200-$1,600. If you go Semi-custom (Les Baer, Ed Brown, Wilson Combat, etc.) you're looking at pistols in the $3,000 range. In any case, 1911's are great pistols.....the only downside is that they will spoil you for any other pistol. There is no comparison shooting say a Glock against a quality 1911. Good luck!!

Maybe trading at a dealer, but just as sure as there are 21rst birthdays, you can sell a $500 1911 that's been reliable.

Don't fear the .45. I have a glock 21 and love the 45. I also researched 1911's for a while and consistently found reviews for the Rock Islands doing well and they sell for less than $500. They sell them at I think Sarco's or whatever the name of the place right next to the Heritage Guild.

They are all worth it. They are not as refined as higher end models, but you can fight with one just as good as anything else, unless you are wonderfully trained enough to be able to tell the difference in a fire fight. The training you'd need to tell the difference is fairly extensive. This is my opinion, only. Some people agree...some don't. My proof is in the numerous sub $600 I own that function 100%. All have had nothing done but mild trigger tuning and recoil spring upgrades (and some better than factory magazines, which you're going to need no matter what 1911 you buy, regardless of price; they only give you so many with the gun).
