    Thumbs down Arched mainspring housing

I like the feel of an arched mainspring housing compared to the flat mainspring housing. I have a Springfield Loaded 1911 which came with a flat mainspring housing. How hard is it to swap one of these out? I was told by a CS rep at Springfield Armory that this could be done but some fitting would need to be done to the new housing. Any advice appreciated. Thanks!

Some mainspring housings will be a drop in fit to the frame, especially if you use another mainspring housing from springfield. Aftermarket mainspring housings may or may not need fitting to the gun (for width and the dimensions of the guide rail).
Smith & Alexander MSHs have been drop in for the most part in the past.

Does your mainspring housing have Springfield's locking mechanism in it? If so, you will need a new spring and plungers to install the replacement housing unless you get an arched MSH from Springfield with the lock system in it.
I believe I even have an arched Springfield MSH with their ILS in it that I'm never going to use. If you want it, send me a PM and you can have it.

I have probably replaced 20 differen't mainspring housings in the past from Ed Brown, Wilson, S&A, Springfield, EGW, etc... and never have I ever needed to fit anything. Don't forget that your Springfield has an ILS housing so the guts from it will not work in a standard mainspring housing. You will need to buy those parts separately. I recommend this kit from Brownells.

Some filing on the top of the MSH and the bottom of the grip safety may be needed so that the MSH doesn't impede the action of the grip safety.
