Found a flare gun today at a flea market
Does anyone know anything about this or has anyone seen one before?
It looks like it has a pewter handle. I tried Google'ing a bit but haven't been able to find this exact model... but as far as I can tell it is similar to Harrington & Richardson's other models.
******EDIT****** - Maybe not H&R, but Webley and Scott according to this picture: http://www.collectorfirearms.org/web...tols/sg-50.htm
On the side it has stamped PISTOL SIG NO1 MK 6.
Any ideas?

Re: Found a flare gun today at a flea market
I had a dead ringer for that one in my plane, Scott, 1916, under the aluminum grips there should be an armory mark, possibly a RFC, and a crown with GR in it (for georgos rex), George V.
The RFC and later the RAF used them for signalling; if a plane was coming in after dark, the flight line crew would launch a flare to let the pilot find the end of the field. In the air, they were used for indicating the target area behind enemy lines for artillery, in the event a plane went down near the lines, they would sometimes be used to indicate the location of the stranded flier.
Hell of a neat find!"...a REPUBLIC, if you can keep it."

Good info guys. Looks like I got a good deal on this thing. I will probably keep it as a wall hanger.

Re: Found a flare gun today at a flea market
I can confirm that it is not an H&R made flare gun. The trigger guard is wrong and the grip frame is not quite the same. H&R flare gun designs were helped along by their collaboration with Webley, so there are similarities, especially with the pieces that have the "yoke" type top barrel locking system.
