Default Who has a light mounted on their RIFLE? Lots of Questions.

Been doing some reading and watching youtube videos. I noticed that a lot of people suggest that you have a good light mounted on your rifle. I had never really thought about this before.

So, I started looking around and reading up and watching more videos, and have some questions.

    1) Do you have a light mounted on your rifle? And if you do, why? If you don't, why not?

    2) How do you have it mounted. Where is it located. Why did you chose that location? Are there any locations that are better than others? Are there any mounts that stand out as really good or really bad to use?

    3) What is the minimum lumen you would use on a rifle? What are you using on yours right now?

    4) How do you turn the light on and off? Do you find it hard to do?

I want to piggyback on your thread. I also have been looking into a light for mounting on my rifle. Hopefully you will get sufficient responses that answer your questions which happen to mirror mine.

150 lumens for nocturnal zombies. Generic light from Amazon with quick release.
I can easily activate it by hitting the button on the back.

Colt 6920 with Magpul hand guards I installed.

    1) Yes, light on rifle. I have not made this my primary HD weapon but plan to after a carbine class. But I took a handgun low light class and definitely want a light on my weapon. Have no idea how to effectively hold a rifle and a light so put one on the gun.

    2) Mounted at 1 o'clock using this exact set up. My understanding is 12 o'clock is considered optimal but with my hand guards and FSB went with this. You don't want it under the barrel as the shadow it throws will be directly on the target.

    3) 110 lumens. Wouldn't want to go lower. Depending on application such as outside, could easily see need for more but I don't think that's a requirement for me right now.

    4) Support hand thumb activates tail cap switch. Not hard at all. Could see the pressure switch but didn't want to invest in it.

My set-up is lightweight which was a requirement for me as we'll as being simple. I like it a lot and see no need to switch. I mentioned this in another thread a while back. When Sandy hit shit was dark, everywhere, I want a light and went with this.

Doesn't this set up get in your way when your grabbing the front of your firearm. It looks like the light is where I would want to put my hand.

Does this mount to the barrel in front of the front sight? Do you have a pic of it on your rifle?

Anyone use a set up like this one.

Bad point I see if if you don't have a pressure pad to activate it, it could be hard to push the button.

No, my hand rests right behind the light.

It's mounted to the hand guard not the barrel. I don't have a pic to upload quickly but here's a thread from another forum showing it and the Magpul mount.

It really is a simple, light weight solution.

1: Yes. Because they're defensive rifles that will likely need to be used in dark environments.

2: In an offset mount. They're both Streamlight Polytac lights in VTAC offset mounts. Left side from of the rifle. Tailcap easily accessed by my thumb. Location is all preference, but as far forward as possible is recommended to reduce barrel shadow. Any mounts from reputable same brands should suffice.

3: I wouldn't use any lower that 100, or any higher than 200 indoors. Too bright for indoor use can cause temporary blindness. Outdoors, a brighter light can be beneficial. HOWEVER, lumens aren't the only thing that indicates brightness. The shape and design of the "bowl" have a major impact of how the light is focused and can make a lower rated light look brighter than a higher rated light. The lumen rating is the LED only. My lights are 120.

4: Just use the button on the back with my thumb. Press half way and it's temporary, or click it on and it stays on. Truthfully, I could do without the "stay on" mode. I'd rather it be a temporary only switch.
