    Default Bought a S&W 4506 from Gander...

Gander Mnts is having a sale on pistols and long guns and I saw the S&W 4506 for 289. It was dirty as crap on the outside, but the inside looked clean. I bought it, cleaned it up and now it looks really good. I want to replace the grip, that'll sweeten it up a little bit. I fired it today and was surprised how well it fired. At first I thought it locked up on me, I pulled the trigger and it locked back with the hammer. The pull was smoother and shorter when it was locked back. I will probably be alternate carrying with my XD9SC, pretty huge size and weight difference.

I don't know the round count of this gun and it don't seem like it needs any replacement parts. How do I know if I should do spring replacements on the whole gun? Also, there seem to be "rubbing" which might be holster wear, is there a way to buff it out or would buffing make it worse? I've included pictures. Thanks for looking.

Welcome to double/single action pistols. Those Smith's run good.

Nice find. Don't worry about the looks.....it's whats on the inside that counts...(reminds me of what a friend told me when I saw the blind date he set me up with!). If it shoots, shoot it. But, if you will carry, research your area for a certified S&W smith to check it out.

I always had a itch for one of those 45's....

I bought my 4506 new in 1989. It has never malfunctioned, it's built like a tank, and will feed anything. It is also an extremely accurate pistol. Some folks think it is too large for concealed carry, but it hides just fine in a Sparks Heritage IWB. Good buy, you will enjoy it.

I'd go ahead and replace the recoil spring anyway. You can order them directly from Smith and they're inexpensive.

I bought a used 4006 a few years ago. It shot pretty well when I got it but the accuracy was greatly improved with a new recoil spring.

1989??? Wow. I didn't know there were that old. What's the difference between a 4506 and a 4506-1? I have the -1 version. Yea it is a wicked piece. Ammo however is a different story. Hehe...

Nice "Vic Mackey" gun. The 4506 is one of my "if I see one, I'm buying it" guns, never thought they even got that cheap, even in dirty condition, IMO you got a really good deal, a lot of people are into that gun.

I believe the 4506 has the hooked trigger guard, and the 4506-1 has the rounded one. I have the 4506. One of the nice things about the 4506 is the feed reliability. It will reliably feed empty cases, along with any ammo that I've evr loaded into the mags.
