I've hit a bunch of polls linked from here and from ARFCOM. All of them skew very heavily for gun rights. Which indicates to me that the most motivated group is the gun rights group. That conclusion is supported in a recent article at Washington Post (sorry, no link handy, but it's worth looking up) that said gun control isn't as big a cause as the antis make it out to be.

This is precisely what i try to point out to people. Its an issue that is blasted by a very vocal minority and defended by an almost silent majority. if every gun owner in America got off their ass and was willing to defend the second amendment as energetically as the anti's promote its defeat there would be no gun control discussion in this country.

    Results as of 2013-05-02, 10.31hrs

What should Congress do about gun control?

    - Leave federal gun laws as they are (95%, 35,563 Votes)

    - Expand background checks, ban assault weapons and limit the capacity of magazines (2%, 934 Votes)

    - Only expand background checks (3%, 908 Votes)
It would appear yet again that our elected officials don't give any fraction of a rat's ass what "we the people" think.

Results like this it makes me wonder what option 2 was on that poll that Obama loves so much.
"should we increase backgound checks or should I kill this puppy?"

I think we would do better focusing on other areas if we wanted to curb violent crime much less gun related gun crime.

Violent crime rates have been declining overall for decades. We would do better focusing on the rogue, out of control government. That problem has been steadily increasing and has been spiraling completely out of control as of late.
