First gun! Ruger sp101- Your thoughts on using 38 specials
Just purchased my first gun! Ruger SP101. I put 38 specials through it a few days ago and was extremely pleased with how much control I had over the recoil (such a heavy barrel helps). But tonight I put the intended 357s through it and ...a.whoa... Not once did I feel like I had control over that thing. I know Ruger says that using 38 specials is fine but I would like to hear from the peanut gallery

I think you already answered your own question. Use 38's for now and practice, practice. Enjoy your 101, I bought one for my wife ( night stand ).

Are you concerned about any damage to the gun? All I've seen so far is extra cleaning needed.

I had an sp101 for while. 38s will be fine for whatever you want them for. They are even a decent self defense round if you use +p ammo.

I practice with 38 spec and use 357 for self defense. Though It's a colt.
....Then Piers Morgan came on and I almost got a concussion from facepalming so hard.

Re: First gun! Ruger sp101- Your thoughts on using 38 specials
The .357 Magnum originated from the .38 special. People wanted more power, but were concerned that a higher power cartridge would be put into an older, weaker gun, so they decided that the .357 Magnum would be a little longer to prevent it from fitting in the cylinder.
The only problem with firing a .38 in a .357 is that a little ring of crud will form where the end of the .38 brass is. It can make it difficult to load and extract .357 brass without a good cleaning.

practice, practice, practice.
Then go practice.
start slow and work up. I always start new shooters with the dan wesson model 15 with 38 specials.

A simple trick to remove the powder residue from 38 in a 357 is to chamfer the inside edge of a 357 case so that you have an internal cutting edge. Simply pass it through each cylinder and follo with a brush. Cleans every time. Dave_n
