HELP!!! transport/license question for .22 rifle.
I am 19 and live in Pittsburgh. I plan on buying my first rifle (a .22) and want to know if i need to take any legal steps before i buy it. I was told by a friend that all i need to do is go to the store and pick it up. my question is do i need to fill out any forms or be licensed to transport the rifle if it is locked in a case in the trunk of my car? my understanding is that it just needs to be locked in a case and be in a seperate case than the ammo and it cant be loaded. please correct me if i am wrong... i could use an answer asap because i want to buy the .22 soon

Re: HELP!!! transport/license question for .22 rifle.
You fill out a ATF Form 4473 when you purchase the rifle and the dealer does an "Instant check" on you (with the info on the 4473 and your drivers license/state ID card)
Transporting rifles is no problem. They must be unloaded and ammo and gun need be in separate containers. No lock needed.

Just an observation here, and maybe a question. You asked for a response "asap". Man, did you ever think you would get a reply in THREE MINUTES! Patriot, you truly are an incredible resource! Do you ever sleep?
Be safe (and get some sleep).

Re: HELP!!! transport/license question for .22 rifle.
This is what I thought the rule was.
I was just at my doctor and he has a new requirement listed
Rifle License. they said it is about a year old.
do we need a license for our rifles?

Your doctor has a new requirement for a 'rifle license'??? Think it is time for a new doctor.

Re: HELP!!! transport/license question for .22 rifle.
The medical groups (AMA?) are very against guns being in household. Read up and you will find more and more doctors now will ask if you have guns in the home. Their stance is that guns in home = dead kids. I would change the latter to dead STUPID kids but thats the medical communities stance on guns regardless. Find a new doc or just refuse to answer that question. Who are they to enforce stuff?
Keep the ammo in a seperate pocket from the gun and magazine and you will be fine. Always leave rifle unloaded with ammo in another pocket of your bag.
If you drivers license does not show your address in Pittsburgh then you may need to prove residency in PA for 90 days. This is in the form of you paying utility bills or cellphone bills or any bills that you can gather from 3 months ago that have your current Pitt address on it. Keep this in mind incase you need to take the paperwork with you.Last edited by blendingnoise; April 22nd, 2008 at 04:12 PM.

Re: HELP!!! transport/license question for .22 rifle.
what are the other requirements?
On another note if you have kids, its probably a good idea to cover your firearm ownership before sending them to school, going to the doctor ect ect. Not saying have them lie, but let them know it could come up so they arent blindsided and say something they dont mean.
