Any way to check a guns serial number before I buy it?

I was wondering if there is any way to check the serial number on a rifle before I buy it . I found a guy on armslist selling a rifle and before I go ahead with a private sale I want to cover my ass and make sure it is ok.

Ask the seller to provide ID and record the information he provides. If he's unwilling to document his sale of the gun then I would pass on the purchase.

Basically just have a bill of sale with drivers license number and name address? But is that enough to protect me? I just want to put myself in any legal hot water. Thanks for the help and advice

I don't think anyone can (legally) "run the numbers" in order to check for you and those "resources" above seem nothing more than a place where victims of crime can log in what they lost - IF they know that website existed in the first place. I can't see it being of much use to be honest, but maybe I'm wrong.


If you're really that concerned, have it transferred at an FFL.
I wouldn't, but it sounds as though you may be worried about it enough to warrant it to make you feel better.

if you are this worried that it is stolen then save yourself a headache and pass on the sale. LE doesnt know anymore on this issue than anyone else. bill of sale covers your bases. if you are really worried pay the extra money and transfer it at a gun shop.

It isn't enough to protect you completely, but it will be strong support in your argument should it become an issue.

The offense involving stolen items requires you to have knowledge of, or reason to believe, it was stolen. A well documented receipt will help assert that you believed the seller was the lawful owner.
