S&W 25-2 in .45 Colt.
I just added my newest N frame to my S&W collection. A model 25-2 in .45 Colt. This has been one of my dream guns. I've been look and waiting for one for quite some time. Last week the LGS got one in, this week, my bonus check came through from work. So...
The barrel is marked 45 Cal. Model 1950
What do you guys think?

Re: S&W 25-2 in .45 Colt.
Just a point of correction, the Model 25-2 is chambered in 45 ACP. The Model 25-5 is chambered in 45 Colt.
The pictured revolver appears to be chambered in 45 ACP, with the short cylinder and the longer barrel forcing cone. (I could be wrong, but it sure looks to be 45 ACP) The Model 25 in 45 Colt has a longer cylinder that extends almost to the front end of the cylinder window, like that of a Model 29 44 Magnum.
The 45 Cal Model of 1950 is actually the first incarnation of the target revolver chambered in 45 ACP, (pre-Model Number) was officially known as the "1950 Target" and has a 6-1/2" barrel when measured from the cylinder face. The later 45 Cal Model of 1955 has a 6" barrel.
A really nice find, especially with the 6-1/2" barrel.

Pinned and recessed excellence. I agree with Noah on the caliber chambering, I am betting it is .45 ACP. It is an excellent revolver and it appears to be in outstanding condition. However, it should be an absolute pleasure to shoot as well as deliver impeccable accuracy and precision...

Re: S&W 25-2 in .45 Colt.
The 25-5 will say "45 COLT " on the barrel. 25-2 is 45ACP with "moon clops" or 45 AUTO RIM. S&W really did not want to make there revolver with "COLT" stamped on the side but thats the name of the cartarige.

You don't have enough guns untill you don't know how many you have.

Re: S&W 25-2 in .45 Colt.
Noah and Steve are correct. It is the 45 ACP, just look at the distance from the cylinder rear to the frame. Designed for Moon Clips (or as I use, 45 Auto Rim) in my 625/5". I have the 25-5 in 45 Colt with the 8 3/8 " barrel which matches my Model 57 (41 Mag) and Model 29 (44 Mag) both in the 8 3/8th barrel length. Saw the 357 mag version last night (Model 27) also in the same 8 3/8th which might just make it home soon. Dave_n

Re: S&W 25-2 in .45 Colt.
The gun does chamber .45 Colt, but the headspace is really sloppy. I checked to see if it would accept .45 ACP on moon clips and .45 auto rim without binding, it does. It looks like someone had the headspace rings inside of the charge holes removed so that the gun would also take .45 Colt. Further research confirmed that the cylinder dimensions are that of the ACP and not the Colt.
Thanks for the input guys.
