Default Need advice on a scope for Remington M700 SPS Tactical .308

Just purchased a Remington M700 SPS Tactical rifle and want to get a scope that will bring out the best in this rifle. I can probably get away with spending up to $500.00 or so. I've been told "mil-dot" or something like that is the way to go? Any information would be appreciated.

    Thanks.

I go here from time to time and they got some good info. They have a few threads on this very subject. http://www.sniperforums.com/forum/op...act-308-a.html

I am not knowledgeable enough to answer your question. I am a pretty new shooter with a 700 SPS in .308

But who ever does answer your question will want to know what distance you'll be shooting with this rifle and what purpose, ie hunting, target, competition etc.

Tomcat88 comes here often and is quite helpful to say the least.

Do a search for some of his posts.

What ranges are you looking to shoot also?

I have used the bottom one with mildots on a suppressed R700 SPS AAC/SD and out to 500 yards it was very easy to use. I think vortex products are a great deal and they work great.

I dig Vortex. Their line that I'd go for doesn't fit in the budget though.
I'm not saying the one's you listed were poor choices, just not my first choice for the price range.

    I dig SWFA(http://swfa.com/SWFA-SS-3-9x42-Tacti...pe-P50716.aspx) and here's why;

3-9x42. Usually you can do 1x per 100 meters, but you can take it a little further if you can youself. It's FFP, with a Mil reticle and Mil external adjustments. The internals are pretty rugged (I'm pretty sure it has brass internals in this model) and it can take a beating. It is $99 over your $500 mark + shipping more than what your budget is.

I'm looking to primarilly target shoot 100 to 300 yards. I might be inclined to try farther if I ever get that good and if I can find a range with those distances.

Oh man I read a few paragraphs of that and now my head hurts . I'll have to ease into that kinda shooting, math was never my strong point.

Animalmother85 pointed out a great scope in the SWFA 3-9x42 that will be MORE than adequate for 100-300+yd target shooting. If you are locked onto that price point & mildot, you've found the winner.

My big question is, given the distances you are looking to shoot, how locked onto a mildot reticle are you? Five hundred dollars can buy you a lot of glass from Nikon or Vortex if you are willing to use a BDC or alternative reticle. There is a reason mildots are the standard, but given your comments with easing into things & that this scope will most likely see known distances (I'm assuming based on your range descriptions above), I see no reason a decent BDC reticle couldn't fit your needs.

I purchased a very lightly used VIPER HS 4-16x50 BDC a little over a month ago for $515 as I valued the warranty/extra magnification/parallax adjustment more than I valued the FFA & Mildot on the SWFA. Of course, your millage may vary.

I never got into mil/mil scope because I am so familiar with moa adjustments. I use the mildots mainly for range finding and quicker shots. I know at 500 yards with my dope that 2 dots down and the metal plate will ring all day.

Research the SWFA SS series of scopes. Mine just came in the mail today. I think its difficult choosing a scope especially if you're traditionally an iron sight shooter.

Scope parameters: What is your application? Consider target distance, nature, and size. Also whether it is moving or stationary.

    Answering the latter dictates:
    1. How much magnification is needed (variable or fixed too)
    2. Special reticle (if any) is needed
    3. Second or first focal plane
    4. Objective lens size
    5. Necessity of parallax adjustment, illuminated reticle and matching turret adjustment to the reticle
    6. Eye relief

    Rules of thumb:
    1. Always choose quality over features
    2. High magnification is rarely needed (or advantageous)
    3. More eye relief is always better
    4. Glass quality is more important than magnification and obj lens size.
    5. Stay away from bullet drop compensator (BDCs) turrets and reticles
-Exception: Vortex calls their Dead Hold reticle a BDC which is misleading. The subtensions are based on MOA increments not on a particular bullet trajectory.
