Age requirement to transfer longarm to son/daughter?
I bought 2 AR lowers. I am expecting and wanted to transfer the lowers to my children but want it done ASAP to ensure my children will have ARs in the event that and future AWB are passed.
I am curious if they have to be of certain age to be able to do such a thing?

Someone correct me if I'm wrong. I was under the impression that no background check was required to gift a firearm (rifle or pistol) to an immediate family member. Since PA doesn't have a registry you wouldn't need to "tranfer" anything.

If you say it's "theirs", then it is. In the case of a complete firearm, it's not safe or legal to allow them full custody and control of the item until they are of age (18), but it can be "theirs" even before they're old enough to understand what ownership even means.

I transferred rifles to my kids by saying "Hey, this is yours!"

Re: Age requirement to transfer longarm to son/daughter?
Technically there is no age requirement for private intrastrate gifts, loans, sales, transfer, etc of long guns to minors.
PA's 18>61>6110.1 only refers to "firearms"(handguns, SBS, SBR).
And Federal's 18>44>922(x) only prohibits the giving or transfer of handguns or handgun ammunition to juveniles(defined as those under 18yo) - with certain exceptions.
Feel free to give them the receiver or a fully assembled long gun.Last edited by knight0334; March 21st, 2013 at 09:43 AM.
