Iraq and similar places. Been hard to get for awhile now. Supplies come and go quickly.

Venezuela has a contract with Wolf to supply their country with the ammo. You can still find the ammo, but the price average is $150+ per case.

Re: where did all the 7.62x39 go?
Seems to me that supply is up lately - no trouble finding it all over. Trouble is the price averages I have seen are around .17 per round locally. Just a short time ago it was .09.
Looks like http://www.sportsmansguide.com/cb/cb.asp?a=217522 has it for .147 + shipping.

Re: where did all the 7.62x39 go?
Have you guys considered assembling a purchasing collective to pool your purchasing power? I'm sure you could get a price break on a full container of ammunition. Be forewarned that a container of 7.62mmx39 is about 125,000 rounds.
I'd use extreme caution to outright shunning of Sportsmans Guide. Nickel & dime USGI stuff is usually okay. The bigger stuff they sell is either the same stuff found elsewhere & everywhere, or worse. They frequently use the term "mil.-spec" (example) for dubious non-military stuff that doesn't seem to sell well. Per the example I received, the barrel lacks proofmarks and the rifling twist is in the opposite direction per USGI specifications. In the picture, it's clear the barrel lacks the hard chrome plating found on later USGI M1911A1 barrels.
Their marketing angle is added hype and inflated prices. Their descriptions, to put it politely, are excessively optimistic.
