Default Ruger gp100 or remington r1911

    Hey guys,

Getting a new gun this month and narrowed it down to either a ruger gp100 4.2" barrel or remington r1 1911. Looking for mainly a range gun at 15 yards, carry during colder months (open carry under coat). Just looking for input. What would you pick and why?

I'd go 1911. Cheaper to shoot. Classic look and reliability and takes a detachable mag in case of a big fire fight. I am not a fan of ruger revolvers at all so you won't get a recommendation from me on the gp

I vote Ruger. My GP100 is a tank and has no issues with everything from sissified standard pressure 38 Special up to big boy 125gr mag rounds. Repeatedly, too. Never locked up on me or anything.

I voted for the R1, but prefer to say any 1911 for a mainly 15 yard range gun. It's an apples to oranges comparison, and you really owe it to yourself to own bothe. I've never had an issue with any Ruger revolver, I still have five of them...

Do you or have you ever owned a 1911? If not you owe it to yourself to at least try one, they are a fantastic pistol. That being said, my choice was the GP100. It's an excellent pistol as well, and I am a fan of Ruger Revolvers. The previous poster mentioned the .45 being cheaper to shoot, that's simply not true unless you buy über cheap ammo like Tula. .357 and .45 are very comparable in price, and .38 is way cheaper. As a defensive round, both are very effective, but I'd probably rather have the .357.

GP100, hands down. The gun is practically indestructible, and with a little tinkering you can make the trigger very nice. The R1, on the other hand, left a lot to be desired both times I handled one. Shotty fit on a number of parts and a crummy trigger turned me off. I've also read a few articles regarding their not so stellar reliability.

Don't know what you currently have, but I voted Ruger for the versatility and indestructible nature of the Rugers... I love my 1911, but I also have an SP101 that I bought 20 years ago when they first came out - it's a tank. I like the fact that you can shoot 38 for practice and carry 357 for protection... I think either would be a fun choice (never handled the Remington, but the 1911 is a hard platform to screw up - even my Taurus works...)

    Good luck, be safe. Cb

Voted 1911 because I just think they are more fun at the range. That said I too have several Ruger revolvers and they are tanks, and I do enjoy them. Take my 44mag deer hunting every year. In stainless, with a rubber grip it takes literally no time to clean it when I get home no matter if it snows, rains or whatever. Still looks like the day I bought it. Just saying because you said you may be carrying in the winter.

I'm biased in that I have a 1911R1, but you have the choice.

^^^Maybe I misunderstood you, but just making sure you know that is CONCEALED carry, not open.

You owe it to yourself to own both. No collection is complete without a Ruger revolver (and the gp100 is an excellent one) and a 1911.

Like mentioned earlier, comparing the two is like apples to oranges.
